Phono
Amp ,LP3
The
MOON LP3 is simple solution for those wishing to
indulge in high quality analog playback. Based on its big
brother, the MOON LP5.3, the MOON LP3 represents a
significant step forward in affordable phono preamplifier
design. Great detail has been paid to noise levels and
dynamic range, making it one of the quietest phono
preamplifiers at its price level. Sonically, it portrays
all the Simaudio hallmarks: clean, powerful, fast and
extended bass combined with an open midrange and airy
extended high frequencies. One of the strengths of the LP3
is its flexibility with respect to end-user adjustments
for resistance and capacitance loading as well as gain;
changing your cartridge will not force you to change your
phono preamplifier. As well, unlike most of the
competition, which either uses mass-manufacturing
techniques or a circuit mounted in a basic folded metal
box, the LP3 is housed in an ultra compact, rigid
all-aluminum chassis with a brushed and anodized front
panel.

Feature
fully powered on-wall/off-wall loudspeaker, Feature
Internally
powered with a high-resolution 150 watt switching amplifier the
Feature allows an unprecedented level of system connection
flexibility. A standard RCA line-level input minimizes wire
clutter by connecting directly to on-wall televisions (and other
devices) without the need for external amplifiers.
Additionally,
standard speaker-level connections allow the fully powered
Feature to integrate with audio systems where RCA connection is
not possible. Consumers choosing to use the Feature with a
traditional receiver will experience an enhanced sonic
experience without the need to upgrade to a more expensive
model. Additionally, if consumers want the added benefit of RCA
line-level connection and have a receiver equipped with pre-amp
outputs, they can bypass the inferior amplification of an entry
level receiver and instead utilize the Feature's superb internal
amp.

Focal
XS, Audio System
Many
audiophiles are very familiar with the Focal brand and its
legendary Utopia series loudspeakers. Now it's time to
introduce everyone to the new Focal XS Multimedia Sound
System. Don't be fooled by the iPod integration that has
permeated everything from running shoes to bathroom
accessories. This is not your father's desktop audio
solution. Focal designed a very nice looking 2.1 desktop
system with great features and sound quality to match.
iPod sync and playback, internal USB DAC, and an analog
input are all part of the new Focal XS Multimedia Sound
System.
The
Focal name is not placed on just any product. The XS
system is 100% Focal and not a run-of-the-mill desktop
audio system from a big box retailer. From the moment you
remove the speakers from the box you will know this is a
high-end audio solution. The speakers are 2.2 lbs. and the
subwoofer is a substantial 18.5 lbs. The design is
reminiscent of something out of Cupertino with its jet
black and anodized aluminum finish coupled to solid metal
speaker stands. Continuing with the stylish looks Focal
includes a magnetic remote control with the XS system.
This allows the remote to stick on to the metal speaker
stands keeping your desktop very clean.

The US space agency's (Nasa) Mars rovers are celebrating a remarkable five years on the Red Planet.
The first robot, named Spirit, landed on 3 January, 2004, followed by its twin, Opportunity, 21 days later.
It was hoped the robots would work for at least three months; but their longevity in the freezing Martian conditions has surprised everyone.
The rovers' data has revealed much about the history of water at Mars' equator billions of years ago.
Artist's impression of a Mars rover (Nasa)
"These rovers are incredibly resilient considering the extreme environment the hardware experiences every day," said John Callas, project manager for Spirit and Opportunity at Nasa's Jet Propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, California.
"We realise that a major rover component on either vehicle could fail at any time and end a mission with no advance notice, but on the other hand, we could accomplish the equivalent duration of four more prime missions on each rover in the year ahead."
Spirit is exploring a 150km-wide bowl-shaped depression known as Gusev Crater. It has found an abundance of rocks and soils bearing evidence of extensive exposure to water.

Criterion
streams films online
Prestige
supplier Criterion Collection quietly relaunched its
Web site, building upon its appeal to cinephiles with an
online store that includes streaming of feature-length films.
The
site, renamed “The Criterion Collection Online Cinematheque,”
includes film clips, essays on films, dispatches from film
experts, press notes and clippings, excerpts from books and
articles, a store, a blog and, most notably, streaming video of
feature-length films with the cost of viewing credited toward a
DVD purchase.
“Bringing
the Criterion idea online has been on our minds for a few years
now," Criterion president Peter Becker said. “Calling it an
online cinematheque was a way of explaining to ourselves what we
were aiming to do—create a space where you can immerse yourself
in great films, read about them, watch them, visit the shop and so
on.” More...

Dark
Knight sets Blu-ray record
The
Dark Knight is a Blu-ray Disc superhero, selling a record
600,000 copies on the new format in the U.S. on its first day of
release on Dec. 9, or about 21% of its total units, according to
Warner Home Video.
The
studio believes U.S. Blu-ray sales could hit 1 million high-def
copies in week one—a format milestone—according to WHV
president Ron Sanders.
“We
think we will hit 1 million this weekend,” said Sanders.
“What’s really encouraging about it is that the Blu-ray
version did exceptionally well across the board. It wasn’t just
selling in Best Buy or Wal-Mart, but also it did well in grocery
and game stores. It was surprising to us just how well it did.”
Prior
to Dark Knight, the best Blu-ray performer was Paramount
Home Entertainment’s Iron Man, which moved 260,000
high-def copies on its first day on sale Sept. 30, and 500,000
units in its first week. More...
