CDT-5800, In-ceiling Loudspeaker

With integrated whole-house audio systems becoming more popular than ever, Klipsch designed the CDT-5800-C to meet the market's demand for a high-performance in-ceiling loudspeaker that easily challenges the inherent limitations of fixed locations.

Thanks to a new patent-pending gimbal mechanism, known as Controlled Dispersion Technology™ (CDT), both the high and low frequencies of the CDT-5800-C can be directed towards the listening area. Because the tweeter is independently adjustable from the woofer, this speaker offers even more precise localization.

Home Theater Battery Backup with AVR Technology, AP30800-10

Modern home theater components contain microprocessors, hard drives, and delicate circuitry that can be easily and irreversibly damaged by blackouts and large power fluctuations. The PureAV Battery Backup maintains constant power delivery to your components ensuring that the memory, settings, and recordings on all of your equipment will be saved in the event of a blackout, brownout, or other large-or small-voltage fluctuations.
Over time small voltage fluctuations can cause damage to sensitive home theater equipment. Most battery backup units switch to battery backup mode only if a power outage occurs. This leaves your home theater unprotected from constant voltage sags and surges that can damage your equipment. For this reason, the PureAV Battery Backup employs Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) Technology to maintain voltage at a constant level without the use of the battery. PureAV's AVR Technology constantly corrects for small voltage fluctuations to provide stable, clean power to all of your equipment. If a power outage occurs, the PureAV Battery Backup switches to battery backup mode until power is restored.

Entertainment and Electronics news

LG's "ultra-multi" player could launch wave of HD DVD / Blu-ray hybrid components

A spokesperson for LG Electronics in North America confirmed to Reuters today that his company had sent a memo to its retailers, urging them to prepare for the release this fall of a high-definition video disc player capable of playing both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats.  LG sells components in the US and Canada, including under the Zenith brand.

This news at least partially confirms speculation this week - the sort of thing that generally sweeps over the CeBIT show floor like a virus - that major CE manufacturers are planning rollouts of hybrid high-def disc players, which attendees are calling "ultra-multi" players, for lack of an official term.  Such speculation was fueled by announcements from system-on-a-chip (SoC) manufacturers such as Atmel - the chipset producers of the CE world - of single, mass-produced components that could provide all the necessary logic for any kind of DVD player or recorder, high-def or low, blue-laser or red.  More

They did it again !

Christopher Boyes, a long time M&K user, won the Oscar for Achievement in Sound for King Kong. Mr. Boyes is no stranger to the Academy having also won Oscars for best sound for Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, Pearl Harbor and Titanic. More

Video, DVR Use Also Planned By Wireless Carriers

New York — Sprint Nextel isn't the only carrier interested in expanding its video content or turning a cellphone into a long-distance DVR remote.

Verizon joined TiVo in announcing TiVo Mobile service, which will let consumers use their cellphones to program their TiVos from anywhere that cellular service is available. (See TiVo story on p. 53.)

For its part, Cingular expanded its video-on-demand (VOD) streaming service to offer 18 different channels of entertainment, sports and news featuring three- to five-minute clips for users of its 3G W-CDMA handsets, which are sold in the 16 markets where high-speed W-CDMA service is available. The handsets will also access the service when roaming in Cingular's lower speed EDGE markets.

Cingular Video service requires a $19.99 subscription to the MEdia Net Unlimited data package, which entitles the subscriber to all content but HBO Mobile and HBO Family Mobile, which requires an additional fee of $4.99 and $2.99 per month, respectively.

Cingular Video offers FOX News clips, news broadcasts from CNN and NBC, and content from Disney, Cartoon Network, FOX TV, ESPN and others. Addition channels planned include CBS Sportsline, made-for-mobile concert events, a weekly NASCAR program and a Turner Classic Movies' behind-the-scenes film show. RealNetworks is providing the technology for Cingular's new VOD service.

DualDisc Could Be Successor To Music CDs

The venerable CD is being pummeled on two fronts, the most prominent beating coming from the online digital download side — iTunes/iPod, et al. But less prominent and far more significant to packaged music and CD/DVD hardware retailers is the emergence of DualDisc as the potential successor to the plain old CD.

Marking its first anniversary, there are now nearly 150 DualDisc titles, including several high-profile discs.

Logically, the twin successes of both iTunes — and its competitors — and DualDisc should spell the end to the stand-alone niche DVD-Audio and SACD formats. That logic is only half right. Since DVD-Audio versions, along with the standard two-channel, are available on most DualDisc titles, stand-alone DVD-Audio titles are likely to disappear.

“In the past year, the major labels have moved away from dedicated DVD-Audio discs and have moved toward the idea of DualDisc,” said Craig Eggers, consumer electronics marketing senior manager for Dolby. “Every major label has introduced DualDisc content.”

But with apologies to Mark Twain, reports of SACD's death are greatly exaggerated, at least according to Sony, its biggest promoter. SACD hardware is available from more than 30 manufacturers, which produce more than 150 different SACD-compatible DVD/CD player models.  More

SportsCentre in High-Def
Toronto , ON , February 6, 2006:  TSN has announced a landmark decision to transition its flagship news and information program, SportsCentre, to high definition. The switch will happen on September 5, 2006, and begin with the delivery of its entire studio portion in HD, along with the rollout of select reports and highlights from the field. Over time, TSN says that the entire SportsCentre production will hit its target of 100 per cent high definition, making TSN the first Canadian broadcaster to commit to the delivery of its daily news program, sports or non-sports, in high definition.

TSN now projects that by September, nearly 50 per cent of its broadcast schedule will be presented in high definition for broadcast on TSN HD. It currently has HD programming confirmed for all of its popular properties including the NHL, NFL, NBA, CFL, IIHF World Junior Championship, Blue Jays baseball, Golf, NASCAR , U.S. College Football, and poker.

Downloads In Multichannel Surround Sound Launched

New York— Consumers who have made the transition from physical media to downloaded music are now able to enjoy select downloaded songs in multichannel surround.

Instant Live has begun offering WMA downloads of live concerts that it records and mixes in stereo-compatible SRS Circle Surround II, a 5.1-channel matrix technology that can be decoded by home and car stereo systems incorporating Circle Surround II matrix decoders or other-format matrix decoders, SRS said. The songs, available on www.instantlive.com, play in 5.1 when burned to a CD or streamed directly from an MP3 portable connected to a home or car stereo system.

Some of the songs became available on the Napster download site in late 2005, SRS Labs said.

Later this year, Music Giants plans to launch multichannel downloads to PCs and to HDD music servers sold through custom-A/V installers. Last year, Music Giants launched high-fidelity stereo downloads in the WMA lossless format, which uses a variable bit-rate encoder to compress music files by up to 50 percent and decompress the files with bit-for-bit accuracy.

Multiple digital audio and A/V portables that support Windows Media 9 are capable of playing back MusicGiants' stereo downloads. With a three-minute song requiring about 12MB of storage space, more than 1,600 songs could be stored on a 20GB portable.  More
