It’s All Systems Go for Satellite Radio in Canada!

The Cabinet of the Canadian Federal Government has upheld the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) decision to issue licenses to Sirius Canada and to Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR).

This development paves the way for the aforementioned Canadian partners of the American Sirius and XM Satellite Radio to bring their respective services to Canadians; to stem the growing gray market of early adopter subscribers; and to imbue their services with quality Canadian content. The decision to uphold the issuing of licenses is said to have been made on the heels of the applicants’ agreeing to increase Canadian content and French-language service.

Both Sirius and XM have agreed to add 4 English and 4 French language services (respectively). The terms of the upheld license required one Canadian service for nine foreign services. That means 80 services will be on tap for any Canadian with a subscription, the necessary reception equipment, and a view to the southwest... More

DVD storage increases a hundredfold

A new laser writing technique has been patented that could see DVD storage capacity increase a hundredfold.

Current DVD capacity is about 8.5GB of data but the new technique, known as Articulated Optical Digital Versatile Disc, could boost that figure beyond 800GB.

It works by burning angled grooves in discs and then analyzing the light reflections from the surfaces to decode the data..More

XM Satellite Radio to Carry National Hockey League Games

XM Satellite Radio has announced a major 10-year agreement to carry National Hockey League (NHL) games; and to implement a 24/7 dedicated hockey channel.

For the next two years, both XM and Sirius will carry NHL games; but beginning with the 2007-2008 hockey season, XM will be the exclusive satellite radio home of the NHL.

For Canadian Satellite Radio (CSR), the Canadian partner of XM, the agreement is a tremendous coup, coming only three days after the welcome news that the Federal Cabinet had approved CSR’s (and Sirius’) CRTC-granted license to operate in Canada...More

It saddens us to report that Bob Moog, creator of the Moog synthesizer, has passed away. His legendary Minimoog synthesizer made its first debut in 1970 and has been said to have revolutionized the role of keyboardists. This was the first truly portable electronic keyboard and years later helped to bring about MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), a set of mathematical tables and programming instructions designed to allow various musical instruments to communicate with one another during the digital recording process. Bob Moog was born in New York in 1934, took piano lessons as a child, and later built Theremins (electronic sound instruments). Bob Moog founded the R. A. Moog Company in 1954 as a part time venture, eventually becoming full time in 1964. Over the years Bob Moog earned many awards for his work including the Silver Medal of The Audio Engineering Society and the Trustee's Award of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy organization). From the Beatles, Yes, Parliament/Funkadelic, to Keith Emerson (of rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer) to hip-hop, jazz and funk; odds are if you have a good-sized music collection you have heard Bob Moog's creations. Various Moog creations include the Micromoog, Minitmoog, Multimoog and Memorymoog. In fact during Enjoy the Music.com's private tour of Peter Gabriel's Real World recording studio you can see within the photos some of Moog's keyboards. Moog is survived by his wife Ileana and former wife Shireleigh Moog.
