CBC Television Canada Enters The World Of High Definition CBC Television will launch CBC HD, the network's high definition television service, broadcasting on two new digital transmitters in Toronto and Montreal with CBC HD's first HD broadcast on Saturday, March 5.
Highlights of CBC HD's inaugural weekend schedule on March 5 and 6 include a premiere of the "Nature of Things: Nature Bites Back--The Case of the Sea Otter." Following this, CBC HD will broadcast highlights from past and upcoming HD projects, including award-winning documentary producer Mark Starowicz's newest project, "Hockey: A People's History," currently in production. Airing on Sunday, March 6, will be the HD version of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", featuring 5.1 Surround Sound.
Programming for CBC HD will be based on CBC's regular network schedule, with HD and wide-screen programming simulcast when available. A number of programs and specials, including "The Newsroom," "Nature of Things: Geologic Journey," and "Getting Along Famously" will air in high definition as available. More
High Court Hear Arguments on File-Sharing Technology WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court expressed concerns Tuesday over allowing entertainment companies to sue makers of software that allows Internet users to illegally download music and movies, questioning whether the threat of such legal action might stifle Web innovation. During a lively argument, justices wondered aloud whether such lawsuits might have discouraged past inventions like copy machines, videocassette recorders and iPod portable music players -- all of which can be used to make illegal duplications of copyrighted documents, movies and songs. Justice Stephen G. Breyer said the same software that can be used to steal copyrighted materials offered at least conceptually ``some really excellent uses'' that are legal. More
Both HD DVD and DVD Layers On A Single Disc TOKYO -- Memory-Tech Corporation and Toshiba Corporation today announced that they have jointly developed a dual-layer ROM (read-only) disc that can store content in both the HD DVD and DVD formats. The newly developed ROM disc has a single-sided, dual-layer structure. The upper layer, closer to the optical head, stores data in the DVD format, and the lower layer stores HD DVD data. The DVD layer has a 4.7GB capacity, satisfying specification of current DVD discs, while the HD DVD layer can store 15GB capacity. The DVD layer can be played back on currently available DVD players. The new disc makes it possible for consumers to view DVD content on standard DVD players and, after purchasing an HD DVD player, to enjoy high definition content on the HD DVD layer from the same disc. The new disc structure also increases options for content providers; they can provide the same content in two formats, or use the HD DVD layer for a feature movie and the DVD layer to store promotional videos or audio content, including the movie sound track. The new disc can be produced on Memory-Tech's existing manufacturing lines, which can manufacture both HD DVD and DVD discs. The disc's manufacturing cost is expected to be comparable with that of single-sided dual-layer DVD-ROM or HD DVD-ROM discs, as it has the same physical structure as those discs. More
Klipsch iFi iPod Dock And Speaker System Klipsch will soon be shipping their new 2.1 channel iPod speaker system, called the iFi) for a bit more than the cost of two of their comparable ProMedia 2.1 systems. Yamaha and XM Radio are making satellite radio at home as easy (or easier) than in your automobile - and very affordable. Starting in April, 2005, Yamaha will offer four new receivers and a few home-theater-in-a-box (HTiB) systems with XM "Connect-and-Play" technology. XM says the new technology is designed to integrate XM into a broad range of home entertainment products, and Yamaha claims that the inclusion of XM's "Connect-and-Play" circuitry makes them the first company to incorporate satellite radio into their A/V receivers. With the new XM-ready Yamaha A/V receivers, all you need to receive XM Radio's 150-plus channels is plug in an XM Connect-and-Play home antenna - and sign up for a subscription, of course. Featuring other captivating scented faceplates, including “Coffee” and “Casino”, the iCool also features an “Expansionary [sic] Memory Slot” which accepts SD/MMC memory cards and a hologram lens faceplate, much like those $3 stickers you could buy featuring dragons outside of the bowling alley. Throwing all (remaining) caution to the wind, Audiotronic went ahead and named the Marijuana & Casino line the “Addiction Series”, leaving little to the imagination.
