William Shatner may reprise his role as Capt. James Kirk on UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise next season, producer Rick Berman has told the sci-fi magazine Starburst. "Bill luckily has landed a wonderful role on the new David Kelley spinoff of The Practice, but Brannon and I have plans within the next few weeks of sitting down with Bill and discussing some possible ways of his being involved in this season of Enterprise," Berman told the magazine. Such an appearance would mark Shatner's first on any of the modern-day Star Trek TV series. He played Kirk in the original series in the late '60s and in seven films.

Cable gears up for digital-ready TV sets

NEW YORK — Digital cable TV subscribers frustrated with having to have a set-top tuner box and another remote can celebrate Independence Day on July 1.

That's when the Federal Communications Commission starts requiring cable systems to be ready to handle a new generation of digital cable-ready TVs and home theater units. The new gear can tune in digital and high-definition TV signals without a cable system's proprietary set-top box.

The products have slots for a CableCard — obtained from the cable company and similar to a laptop PC card — which will ensure subscribers get the services they ordered.  More

Apple has joined with BMW

to develop an audio adapter that would allow BMWs to connect iPods to the BMW's audio system. The device will reportedly allow users to control their iPod or iPod mini through controls mounted on the steering wheel (similar to cruise control) or an auxiliary headset. The adapter also allows playlist or song track viewing, and lets users charge their iPod.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs alluded to the upcoming adapter during his iTunes Music Store keynote in London yesterday saying "Later this year we are hoping to make some announcements for in-car listening" while addressing customer desires to have the iPod work better in the car. While making this statement, Jobs reportedly displayed an image on of the interior of a BMW automobile, with the BMW logo digitally removed.

ESPN Flips the HD Switch

If there is a hue in the visible color spectrum that does not appear in ESPN's new hi-def "Sports Center" set, it's not immediately apparent. The 5,000-square-foot set came alive like a disco floor full of dancing Christmas trees last Monday, when ESPN President George Bodenheimer and Connecticut Gov. John Rowland performed a ceremonial "digital ribbon cutting" by fingering a touch pad on the anchor desk.

"All these millions of dollars to make Chris Berman look thinner," marveled the governor, taking a crack at the veteran host of "Sports Center."

Even with one of five HD studio cams pointed his way, Berman will have his work cut out for him to not be upstaged by the set. Indeed, it hardly seems possible that a sports highlights program could do justice to the most technologically advanced television set anywhere. A triangular, 18-foot, floor-to-ceiling tower of massive, convex, Barco back-projection, hi-res capable monitors dominates one wall of the studio like a huge fireplace chimney in a Rocky Mountain mansion. Behind the anchor desk, graphics, logos and still shots materialize out of the fog on a backdrop of Belgium glass with three, synchronized back-projectors trained on it.  More

Ray CharlesIt greatly saddens us to report that singer, songwriter, musician and twelve time Grammy Award winner Ray Charles passed away at age 73. At the age of six Ray was blind due to glaucoma. That never stopped his love for song and he learned to read and write music in Braille at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind. In the 1940's Ray was already recording rhythm and blues and cool pop music of the time. Only a few years later, in 1951, his first hit "Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand" brought his voice and music styling to a large audience. Other hits include "This Little Girl of Mine," "Drown in My Own Tears," "Hallelujah I Love Her So," "Lonely Avenue," "Unchain My Heart," "Hit the Road Jack," and "The Right Time." Ray Charles recorded and/or played with many of the great jazz/pop/soul/R&B artists over the next five decades, including a few movie/TV gigs (Blues Brothers, etc). Ray's deep love and joy in bringing music to the world will be greatly missed.

Marlon Brando Dies at Age 80. Marlon Brando, two-time Oscar award-winning actor of “On the Waterfront” and “The Godfather”, died Thursday of lung failure according to the UCLA Medical Center. He was 80 years old.
Brando began his acting career as the symbol of American machismo and rebellion in roles such as Stanley Kowalski in “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951) and a bike gang leader in “The Wild One” (1953). In 1972 he revived his career by playing one of the most respected characters in all of movie history, Don Vito Coreleone, mafia patriarch in Francis Ford Coopola’s “The Godfather.”  Although his life may have been a little off-center, his ability to capture emotion and intensity in his roles was unparalleled thanks to his masterful practice of Method acting that inspired an entire generation of actors.
