Satellite Radio Decision Appealed

Ottawa , ON , June 27, 2005:  A coalition of organizations released a letter today appealing to the federal cabinet the recent Canadian Radio-television Communications Commission (CRTC) decision to license satellite radio service in Canada .  The license would permit two applicants, Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. (partnered with XM Satellite Radio in the U.S.) and Sirius Canada Inc. (partnered with Sirius U.S.) to offer their services in Canada, utilizing signals implemented by the two U.S. counterparts, which already cover all of North America.  Various groups expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision last week, concerned that it does not offer protection to Canadian artists, nor follows provisions within the current Canadian Broadcasting Act.  More

3 of 4 Americans prefer movies at home
Young adults like cinemas; older people would rather wait for DVD.

If you like sitting in front of your big-screen TV watching a movie on the DVD player, you're not alone. By almost three to one, American adults prefer watching films at home rather than at a theater, says a new Associated Press-AOL News poll.

The survey comes at a time that Hollywood is enduring its worst slump at the box office in two decades and raises questions about whether a major cultural change is occurring or whether a series of temporary factors is leaving a lot of theater seats empty. More

Pioneer announces format for recordable Blu-ray discs

Now that the Blu-ray/HD-DVD peace talks have broken down, the battle has entered a new phase: developing standards for recordable discs. Toshiba has already announced a format for recordable HD-DVD discs. Now, Pioneer has struck back with a spec for Blu-ray recordable (BD-R) discs. Single layer BD-R discs will hold 25GB, while Toshiba’s recordable HD-DVD-R reportedly holds a mere 15GB. And the race goes on…More

High-definition H.264 video playback

H.264 is the video compression standard that will be used in the next generation high-definition video players such as Blu-ray and HD-DVD. The ATI H.264 video demonstration with ATI's next generation Radeon® technology will occur during Computex Taipei 2005 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

H.264 is a new video compression standard that's designed to have two to three times the compression efficiency of current schemes such as MPEG-2, while simultaneously improving overall image quality. This increased compression efficiency is highly computationally demanding, therefore graphics hardware assistance is crucial for real-time decoding of high bit-rate video. Working with industry leaders including CyberLink Corp., ATI's Radeon graphics acceleration technology meets the high-definition and computational demands of H.264 More

Sharp Begins Giant LCD Plant Construction TVs.
Output will go to make large LCD TVs that are more competitive with plasma
Sharp has started construction of a factory that will be capable of handling the largest-ever sheets of glass used to make LCD (liquid crystal display) panels, the company has announced.

The Osaka-based consumer electronics firm is investing $1.35 billion to build the factory in Kameyama in Western Japan; the plant will start producing glass panels in October 2006 using so-called 8G (eighth-generation) manufacturing technology.

The 8G process means that the factory can handle glass sheets measuring 85 inches by 94 inches. A single sheet of glass that size can produce eight panels measuring 40 inches to 49 inches diagonally, or six panels of 50 inches or bigger diagonally, the company said.

Onkyo Helps You Dock Your iPod
Onkyo has introduced the DS-A1 remote interactive dock ($100) to provide integration of iPod audio playback and photo display with Onkyo home-entertainment systems. The DS-A1 adds the ability to operate key control functions using the receiver's remote control. This allows the iPod to function as if it were a home CD player or other source component. Because DS-A1 employs Onkyo's RI system, which enables users to operate an entire system of the company's components with a single remote control, the DS-A1 is backwards-compatible with most of the Onkyo components manufactured in the past decade. The DS-A1 RI is compatible with third- and fourth-generation iPods, iPod photos, and iPod minis. The Onkyo DS-A1 has a white finish that matches most iPod models and includes all necessary cabling.
