Full
HD D-ILA Home Theater Front Projector, DLA-HD750
Introducing
the DLA-HD750, a full HD D-ILA front projector with 50,000:1
native contrast ratio, three D-ILA devices, 2x motorized zoom
lens HQV Reon-VX video processor, Color Management, on-screen
gamma control, flexible set-up and more. The DLA-HD750 brings
Full HD to your home with the industry's highest native contrast
ratio. The "native" means that it does not rely on an
iris mechanism to maximize contrast depending on the average
brightness of one scene. This technical sleight of hand employed
on other projectors, effectively changes overall luminosity, so
that blacks are slightly bleached in bright scenes, while light
colors appear duller in dark scenes.
There is neither an iris mechanism nor a compromise in the
DLA-HD750 projector.
The DLA-HD750 is a THX Certified front projector. With a strict
focus on image quality and signal processing performance, THX
certification promises that the HD750 is capable of presenting a
wide range of video content at maximum resolution with the
correct color and luminance levels.

LCD Specs Routinely
Inflated – Plasma Still Better
Plasma
still gives a better picture than LCD, even after all these years.
According to thorough testing conducted by DisplayMate.com and
Insight Media, plasma scored consistently higher ratings than LCD.
The test also exposed the revelation (that may come as no surprise
to some) that many of your LCD display specifications are highly
exaggerated.
Which
is better LCD or Plasma? The debate might be winding down these
days as Plasma looks like it’s a display technology that’s on
the way out. Now recent improvements have closed the gap in
picture quality between LCD and Plasma. No more can LCD be damned
as too slow now that 120 Hz has become cachet. Even black
levels and contrast ratios are cropping up to plasma standards,
there seems to be little resistance in the market for salespeople
to pitch LCD as having just as good or better
picture quality than competing plasma displays. But according to
DisplayMate.com’s testing, we’re not quite there yet. More
Digital TV
Transition in Canada Causes Uproar Over-the-Air
The
U.S. has successfully
completed its digital TV transition, but here in Canada, we
have until August 31, 2011 before all analog TV signals are
transitioned to digital. But already, residents in some small
cities are crying "unfair" that they will be no longer
be able to access free, over-the-air (OTA) TV signals.
Vector
Research + Development conducted a poll in Kamloops, BC, and found
that all who risk losing their "free" TV will simply go
without rather than sign up for cable or satellite; and 42% say
they'll just watch TV on the Internet. The poll was commissioned
by the Canadian Media Guild (CMG), which represents employees at
Canadian broadcasters.
The
Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)'s
ruling requires that, as of August 31, 2011, broadcasters provider
OTA signals in 29 major cities. Kamloops is one of the cities that
would be excluded from that list, and Vector says the city is
"representative of hundreds of communities across
Canada" that would also be excluded. According to Vector, 11
million Canadians living outside of the biggest cities in Canada
would be affected in their ability to successfully access TV for
free, over-the-air. More...

Exhibits New Reference Series Black Diamond II CURVE Projection
Screen
The All
New Black Diamond II CURVE Combines the Benefits of a Curved
Screen Along with the BD II’s Superior Contrast, Color Accuracy,
and Uniformity
SI is
proud to announce that it will exhibit the new Reference Series
Black Diamond™ II CURVE projection screen during the 2009 CEDIA
Expo, held in Atlanta from Sept. 10-13 at the Georgia World
Congress Center, booth 1137. The Black Diamond II CURVE is
currently shipping.
“SI’s
new CURVE Reference Fixed frame gives you the most immersive
experience available,” said Ryan Gustafson, SI Screens
president. “Curved screens have distinct advantages over common
‘flat’ screens, especially in installations where the throw is
very short (1.6 or less) and pincushion distortion becomes an
issue. With up to a 30 percent wider viewing angle, SI’s new
Black Diamond II CURVE Reference Fixed frames give viewers the
most immersive experience available.”
According
to SI, curved screens help compensate the slight pincushion
distortion that occurs when an expansion-based anamorphic lens is
used, especially in shorter throw installations. An
inward-curving screen naturally produces a form of “barrel”
distortion which can partially compensate for any remaining
“pincushion” from the lens. In a general sense, the lower the
throw ratio, the more noticeable the distortion, and therefore the
more of a “need” for a curved screen.
Has Home Automation
Standard Finally Arrived? ZigBee Pro with Control4 as ‘Anchor’
ZigBee
aims to win the home automation-standards race, and the initial
surge is about six weeks away, according to Eric Smith, CTO of
Control4.
Control4 is a home-control manufacturer that claims roughly 1
million installed ZigBee nodes, including light dimmers, keypads,
thermostats, controllers and universal remotes.
ZigBee is a low-rate RF (2.4 GHz) mesh-networking protocol
developed for industrial and residential automation. It is based
on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard that defines low-power radios.
So when I talk about ZigBee not being a "standard," the
folks at Control4 cringe.
Most recently, in an article on ElectronicHouse.com, I compared
ZigBee with its main competitor Z-Wave More...
