CD/Tuner/Amplifier System, Solo

So what is the Solo then? It's a CD player, an amplifier and both a DAB and an FM tuner (or an AM/FM tuner, for the US) that sits in an extremely stylish case with full remote control and stunning ease of use. Now any number of far eastern brands have made functionally similar products but what differentiates the Solo is Arcam's credentials in the hi-fi field. It was the first major company to bring a DAB digital tuner to the market and its CD players and amplifiers have been among the most successful in the budget and mid-price markets since way back when.

Inside the case is a CD player based on the Arcam CD73 with 24-bit Wolfson DACs and a Colpitts clock that will play both CD-Rs and the less commonly accepted CD-RWs. The amplifier is a 50-watt design with twin toroidal transformers and nine independent regulators while the preamp offers the convenience of front panel mini-jacks for headphones and MP3 players or games.

Live HD from Space

November 10, 2006 — NASA plans to once again make space history on November 15th when it broadcasts the first live High Definition Television images from the International Space Station (ISS). NASA is planning two live broadcasts from the ISS, both featuring Expedition 14 Commander Michael Lopez-Algeria. The camera operator will be Flight Engineer Thomas Reiter. Although the broadcasts will originate from 220 miles above the surface of Earth, on the ground the HDTV signals will be handled by Discover HD Theater and NHK. Those without access to Discovery HD Theater on their home TVs can see the broadcast at their local Discovery Channel store.

Gennum Awarded Technical Emmy For HDTV Innovation

Burlington, ON, November 2, 2006: Burlington, ON-based Gennum Corp. has received a Technical Emmy Award for more than a decade of technological innovation that enables television studios to produce high definition (HD) broadcasting.

With this win, Gennum joins the ranks of such past winners as the BBC, Xerox Corp., Panasonic Corp., and Sony Corp. While the Canadian firm hardly boasts comparable brand recognition, it’s video processors and scalers are at the heart of an increasing number of high-end AVRs and preamp-processors (including one hailing from another Canadian firm, the new Statement D2 from Anthem).

Gennum’s Serial Digital Interface (SDI) chip-set, found in television-studio cameras, monitors, mixers and recorders, allows TV studios to transmit uncompressed, unencrypted digital signals extremely quickly within a studio’s production facilities. As increasingly more TV studios produce in HD they need to move enormous amounts of data around the studio to produce and edit content efficiently.

Comcast Looking To Launch HD Sports Network?

TVPredictions.com is reporting that Comcast is looking at creating an HD sports network that would feature NHL hockey and professional golf. The Outdoor Life Network, which recently changed its name to Versus, has the rights to some NHL games, as well as a variety of other sporting events, but the channel isn’t available in HD to most viewers.

Comcast, which owns the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL, broadcasts not just Flyers games in HD, but also many other teams in other markets and on other cable systems. These channels are available locally, but are rarely if ever picked up as part of the national feed for DirecTV’s NHL Center Ice Package. Comcast produces localized sports reports not unlike those of Fox. More
